Writing an interesting post is an art itself. Some writers exhibit great knowledge but lack writing skill. Their posts become difficult to read. The trick is to learn how you can engage your audience for some time. Here are 10 tips that, if kept in mind, can make your posts more interesting and easier to read.
1. Short sentences and paragraphs
Always keep your sentences short and simple. Long sentences are difficult to understand. Similarly, paragraphs should also be kept small. We live in a world of tweets and text messages and it has become our habit to read small lines. Long sentences are a big no.
2. Use of headings and sub-headings
Content neatly divided and arranged with the help of headings and sub-headings looks cleaner and easier to read. It lets the reader find the portions that interest them and skip to it instead of reading the full post too. Keep the font size of headings larger than normal so that they stand out.
3. Highlight important parts
Highlight important parts by placing the text in a box with some light background color. There is an interesting plugin named Shortcodes Ultimate, which gives a lot of options to highlight the content.
4. Use bullets and numbering
As you can see, I have used numbering to list these 10 points. You can use numbering and bullets to make a list, which is more interesting to look at than a full block of text.
5. Highlight important words with colors, callouts, etc.
If there is any word that is very important, always highlight that word using the bold or italics functions. You can also use color to highlight the word, as color gives extra emphasis. Just always make sure that the color you choose goes with the color scheme of your website. Shortcodes Ultimate will also give you options to highlight words.
6. Use images
Someone once said that "a picture is worth thousand words." Use images for reference wherever possible, but keep in mind that you should use small images. Some writers tend to use very large images within posts that break the flow of reading. Large images also take some time to load on slow internet connections and you don't want your readers to lose interest before your post has even loaded.
7. Use examples where possible
Examples make posts more relatable, and therefore more interesting. Always use examples that are relevant to your potential audience. If you are referring to some webpage, always include links so that users can jump directly to that webpage for more details.
8. Use facts and figures
Always make use of facts and figures whenever possible. This makes the writing genuine and believable.
9. Use of tables
If you need to represent a long list of data, always use tables. Tables are easier to read and understand. You can use Easy Table or similar plugin for it.
10. Break the long posts in to multiple parts
Everybody is in hurry these days. If they see very long posts, they tend to move on to another website. If you are writing about a topic that cannot be completed in 800-1000 words, break the posts into multiple parts. You can name them like this: Post Main Title Part 1 – Subtitle 1, Post Title Part 2 – Subtitle 2 and so on, and remember to include the links to the different parts at the bottom of each post.
