Contest Brief
3. Assignment 5 (20 points) - Sculpture:
David and Goliath:
Research the four sculptures listed below and read the passage from the Bible (Samuel, chapter 17, verses 1 through 58) that tells of the encounter between David and Goliath. It is available online at the following link:
https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1%20Samuel%2017&version=NIV
For your essay, I would like you to compare and contrast three of these sculptures focusing on how they accurately depart or follow the text. Which one do you think is a more accurate representation of David and why? How would you explain the discrepancies between sculpture and text?
Your comparison should be between 600 and 800 words. Make sure to give credit to the sources you used and to include a bibliography.
Donatello: David, bronze, c.1430s, Bargello National Museum, Florence
Andrea del Verrocchio: David, bronze, c.1473-75, Bargello National Museum, Florence
Important Note: Make sure to research the discrepancy between the way Verrocchio intended his sculpture to be displayed and the way it is now presented at the Bargello Museum.
Michelangelo: David, marble, c.1501-04, Galleria dell’Accademia, Florence
Gianlorenzo Bernini: David, marble, 1623, Borghese Galleria, Rome
