PAPER ASSIGNMENT Image comparison 800-1000 words (3-4 pp) Using the concepts formal composition [color, line, scale, structure, gesture, posture, handling, etc] compare two maritime works that share TWO of the following characteristics · the same standard subject - (mythic eg Odysseus and the Sirens or historic eg Columbus's landing, the battle of Trafalgar, or generic - a regatta, a royal landing, a port scene.) · the same place and time of origin (e.g. 16th century Netherlandish, 18th century Venetian, 19th century British) · the same medium or technique (e.g. oil on canvas, etching, watercolor, decorative porcelain, etc) You may use one image that you have already written about if you wish. The main purpose of this paper is to show your reader what can be learned from looking at your two chosen images TOGETHER, rather than simply one at a time. It is not enough simply to list similarities and differences. In order to make your comparison meaningful you need to establish a RELATIONSHIP between the two works you choose, that your systematic comparison will illuminate or clarify. · If they are contemporary -- what does your analysis tell you about the time or place that produced them? · If one work is later than the other -- Has one work influenced the other, directly or indirectly? Do they represent different phases in the development of a particular artist's career or movement? · If they are examples of a similar technique or format or medium - do they show a range of different effects the same technique can produce? Or do they show how the same technical effects (e.g. thickly applied paint, high contrast, thin lines, or a printmaking technique) can be used different expressive purposes? · If they are two versions or treatments of the same subject -- do they seem to contradict or confirm each other's approach? Are they meant for the same audience? Do they serve the same purpose? Include a copy of the image, or a thumbnail with a link to it, in your text.
