So this is the project, sorry if this goes on a bit: I'm working on a sound installation that allows users to 'physically compose' music by taking objects into and out of a basin representing their 'personal mix'. Each object that enters the basin triggers a different piece of looping audio, and this stops when the object exits. As more objects are added, the sounds accumulate. Now the problem is, I don't really know how to do this... I was planning on using RFID tags, with a reader/readers on the surface of the bowl and each object tagged. From things I have read it seems the best way to do this would be with a Raspberry Pi connected to a midi shield and nfc reader, so the value of each different object is separated into a different midi channel, but I don't know with any certainty that this is best, or how to begin working on this! I'm basically looking for anyone who is able to provide me a bit of wisdom so I have a solid starting point - can you think of another way I could approach this? I'll then be looking for help with programming too. Basically, if anyone would be able to take on running through ideas with me and providing me with light support, that would be so great. If you want visuals/more info on the project/have any questions please get in touch. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm an interaction designer and creative coder specialized in interactive spaces and installations. In the past, I have worked on many interactive projects with Arduino or similar platforms (please see my portfolio at [login to view URL]) I could give you strong advice on how to approach this kind of project and also help out with the programming. Would you do all the physical work on the project including soldering and such? You are welcome to contact me if you are interested in working together. There is many open questions still – but I'm sure we can fix the project together. Best regards, Andreas

Hello. If your object physical position doesn't matter, e.g. rotating or distance, you gonna use ACR122U NFC reader with Raspberry. So the script will ask program called "nfc-list" from libnfc package once a second for example. Nfc-list will show UIDs of connected tags. Then you will extract them using command line magic. Everything could be done via Python script. Other way is to use Arduino and RFC522 chip shield. It can do basically the same but program will be on C. Afaik tags could be read all together. Hope this helps.

Hi there! I thnik I can help You with the project. I'm an electronics/software engineer with 10 years expirience in RFID systems and more than 10 year expirience in C/C++ programming. My last project (finished this year) was a "hands free" ski resort turnstile based on RaspberryPi2 and RFID ISO15693 module. Generally, my work has focused on professional access control RFID systems for years. I thnik RFID is a good solution to use it in Your project. The question is which standard should be used. Its depends on: - number of tags (sound tracks) using simultaneously, - how big should be a surface for reading tags, - how big should be a range of reading tags. After answering to questions above we will be able to choose suitable RFID standard. If it will be Mifare, You got ability to use NFC (smartphones) in Your system. Following it - a posibility of providing additional functions related to users smartphones. Just think about it... Regarding platform, I think Rasperry is good idea to use it ( at first we should check polyphonic capabilites of this board). I have got expirience in programming and configuring Raspberry for use it in 24/7h worinking devices. I just started my adventure with freelancer.com as my account says... Best regards Wojciech Bogal

Hello colleague, I also like to do audio-visual installation art. And can help you with great pleasure. From simple advice for free to of finished devices and / or detailed documentation how to make... ...it all depends on the size of the objects and the fields in which they have to decide. RFID is not working at long distances and lots of objects. But if you make your own version, you can have many objects in a large frame... Whether you just want to enable or disable loop or need to change some parameter depending on the position of the object? It is also possible!

Hi I have a team of 2 technical developers who have built a lot of electronics project. By the sound of your idea it seems fairly doable in 10 days. My team has developed digital electronic stethoscopes and other such projects. One of the person has been a research intern for MIT, Boston. I'd like to know a little more detail on this and then perhaps we can work on a milestone basis with this. The first step would be to understand the entire situation in detail, for which we will have to have a conversation that explains your idea. Then we would fix upon a hardware (ex RasPi or Arduino) and a software platform and figure out the components needed and the best way to do it at the least cost. The third step would be where my people will help you develop the code for this. If you have any queries ping me.
