Description of job:
Layout a multi-hundred-page catalog based on the blog at [login to view URL] We are looking for a layout designer who can match an established style as shown on the finished sample pages.
The job is to take 100 pages with text and graphics and fit the text and pictures into a pleasing arrangement according to our design motif. However the first step is to move bits of the pages' content from one page to another according to notes on the page. You will be given scans of "placement" pages which include all of the items to be laid out on a page, as well as editor's notes describing prioritization for the items. In some cases, the notes will instruct you to move items to/from the page, or to delete an item completely. The editor's notes will also indicate occasional copy edits (textual changes/deletions).
Two PDFs containing scans of sample "placement" pages ([login to view URL]) and completed layouts ([login to view URL]) are attached. Additional completed layouts are available for reference.
While design guidelines will be provided, some judgement is needed. There may occasionally be too little or too much content on one page. Parts of the items need to stay together. Additional detailed design guidelines will be provided. However, the designer must understand -- and closely inspect -- the material on the page.
Articles are tiled on pages so that the entire page is filled. Generally, pages are split into 5 to 6 columns, with some articles spanning multiple columns. Tinted backgrounds for each item are applied to distinguish individual items.
You will work in pre-generated InDesign pages. Our InDesign documents contain established paragraph and character styles. In most cases, the appropriate paragraph styles have already been assigned, but you may need to make some adjustments (for example, applying a list style if one is needed and has not been applied already).
You are performing preliminary layout. Refinements will be made in-house after your preliminary layout is complete.
All work is to be performed remotely from your location on your equipment and software.
If your work is satisfactory, we have several hundred of additional pages we will assign for completion.
