I am looking for a system administrator to help with a recovery effort to recover data from VMware .vmdk file(s). These files contain an Ubuntu 14.04 server and I need to extract data from /var/www/html folder (all files). You need to have experience managing VMware and Ubuntu. Ubuntu servers have been set to use LVM. These server images are converted from Hyper-V but something apparently went wrong with the conversion as the machines refuse to boot. So the job may require the admin to mount disks to another server. I’m expecting the job to take some 3-4 hours and understand that it may fail. You will be paid hourly nevertheless. The work should take place on Tuesday 31st March starting from 18:00 Finnish time, so please make an offer only if you are able to work from 18:-00 – 24:00 on Tuesday 31st March Finnish time (GMT+3h, EEST time zone). And if you are selected, access to accounts will be provided before that so you can get familiar with the environment.

Hello, I have experience in recovering data from VMWare (both desktop versions and ESXi) images, either onsite with physical access or remote disaster recovery. For this task, I will need a virtual machine, preferably debian linux (which I can install myself, no work on your part needed) with twice the disk space of the .vmdk file (one for original source file, the second for any resulting file after conversion) + some overhead for the linux system itself (10GB sufficient) I will mount the .vmdk, convert to other format if necessary, examine the LVM, find the right partition and extract the data. If you'd like, we might event fix the machine so it will boot on Hyper-V (I have been converting files from linux KVM virtualisation to Hyper-V - some minor changes in configuration and maybe different kernel), or set up a fresh virtual http server. I have 15+ years many UNIX flavors adminstration experience. Have vast experience of damaged file systems recovery either from almost broken media or from saved filesystem's images in a file. As an example I have proven recovery experinece for MYDATA MY9 'SMD pick & palce machine' and BRANDT optimat kdf 530 'Edge bandinп Machine'. Of course there are anoter way to keep things like this working - jast make reserving copies! But my skills are required when the disaster has already happened. Speaking about .vmdk we can mount any part of the image as raw bytes sequence if anythhing goes wrong with vmware-mount. I have self made recovery tools to save EXT2/3 inodes and thier chains.
