I have an accelerometer and would like to calculate position/height during movement. There is a code example that can be followed but it needs to be modified for accuracy and filter out noise. Basic idea is to integrate acceleration to get speed and integrate speed to get distance. [login to view URL] I have both raw acceleration/gyro/magnometer data and fused data using either euler angles or quaternions. The movement will be mostly up and down motion and I would like to calculate the height in mm/cm pref. at ~5 cm accuracy. I can provide recorded data of the movement with the given height, I need in return a function in any language (Pref. C/C++/Java/...) given the above input.

Hello, I have over 12 years of C#.NET programming experience and I have 17 years of Mathematica recreational experience. The data that you have; is it sufficient to know if a good position algorithm is produced based on how well it matches your given data? For example, does your data introduce various type of noise encountered in the real world? Anyhow, what I'm proposing is development of an algorithm that takes your real world data (and I'm assuming you have it matched with position for the sake of comparison) and computes the position such that it falls within the tolerance you are trying to achieve. Thank you for your consideration.

Hi, As I am an engineer within the fields of physics and programming I think that I am qualified for this job. However, I would like to get some more information such as raw data, device and basically everything you got before I know if this is doable or not. Best regards, Niklas

I have done a lot of work with IMU devices, and it is extremely difficult to estimate distance based mainly on an accelerometer. This is because the electrical noise inherent in any accelerometer reading tends to accumulate under double integration (you get extremely high velocities very quickly). So, unless your system is bounded and you can actually make measurements to devise a model for the motion sensor data that is correlated with distance, you are going to have a real hard time getting an accurate distance. You would be much better off using either an acoustic or optical sensor for measuring distance. Can you describe the system and what other options are available.
