A sample AVI codec either as a VFW driver or as a DirectShow filter that, for the sake of the sample, encodes and decodes video into a custom format. Whether it is implemented as a VFW driver or a DirectShow filter is left largely up to the coder, as long as the codec is easily usable without the need to install any 3rd party or Microsoft software on a Win2k SP4 computer. The custom compression format, for the sake of the sample, should be something simple such as RLE, Gzip or libpng encoding. It should, naturally, be easily changeable to our compression format and have its own fourcc code. It should be able to handle 4, 8, 15, 16 (555 and 565), 24 and 32 bit formats. A sample for a "writer" application is also required - one which takes a series of .bmp files with matching dimensions and color depth (any valid .bmp dimension must be supported) and produces an avi, asf or wmv file using the codec.
