Creating Unit Conversion Program in Excel

Scientists and engineers use many different units in their calculations. For example, volume may be expressed as gallons, cubic feet, liters, cubic centimeters, etc. Often data is available in one set of units, and needs to be converted into another. A pressure in pounds per square inch must be converted into Pascals, or a temperature in Fahrenheit converted into Celsius (centigrade). An Excel add-in program is needed so people can convert a column or row of values in one set of units to any other set. The user specifies the existing units and the desired ones, the program calculates a conversion factor, and the user uses Excel's fill command to make the conversion. The attached Excel workbook shows an example of how this might be done. Project criteria are listed in this workbook as an embedded WordPad file. Conversion factors can be calculated from data provided by the NIST Special Publication 811, 1995 Edition, "Guide for the Use of the International System of Units (SI)" which can be downloaded from the NIST web page.
