Three-phase induction motors are robust, reliable and cheap. With an appropriate source of energy (wind, water) they can be used to provide free-standing generation in remote areas where no ‘mains’ electricity is available. To do this effectively the connected load has to be controlled in a way which ensures that voltage and frequency are tightly controlled. This project involves designing and implementing a free-standing single-phase supply using a three-phase induction motor.
