Speed up Magento 2 Search Results Rendering

We have a Magento 2 site that seems to be quite slow at rendering search results page (and in fact any category page that has quite a few products and is not cached).
When debug is added to the page it seems to indicate that a big chunk of the time is taken up by:
TEMPLATE: app/design/frontend/THEME/default/Magento_Catalog/templates/product/[login to view URL]
The search uses sphinx and this seems to be returning results quickly.
