JustHanging Ltd. are an Engineering company specialising in the design and manufacture of brackets. Their most popular design is the SupportMaster2000 (illustrated below), although a potential customer has enquired about the possibility of purchasing a slightly different bracket (called the SupportMaster3000).

JustHanging Ltd need to determine if the deflection and stress generated while in use are within acceptable ranges.

You have been employed as a consultant engineer to perform a stress analysis study, in the form of finite element analysis, to create a parameterised model which can be altered to calculate the deflection and stress of the SupportMaster2000 and SupportMaster3000 under loading. JustHanging Ltd have provided the following information:

• Engineering Drawing of the SupportMaster2000

• Design parameters:

SupportMaster2000

R1= 12mm

D1= 3mm

Thickness(t)= 2mm

Youngs modules= 200GPa (200000 as model is in mm)

Poissons ratio= 0.3

Loading ( on lower bolt holes)=100N

SupportMaster3000

R1= 15mm

D1= 2mm

Thickness(t)= 2mm

Youngs modules= 200GPa (200000 as model is in mm)

Poissons ratio= 0.3

Loading ( on lower bolt holes)=100N

• Theoretical calculation of the maximum stress of the SupportMaster2000.

You are required to submit a professional report that covers the following:

o Model construction:

 Important details regarding the model construction

o Validity of the model (demonstrated on the SupportMaster2000):

 Demonstrate convergence through both h- and p-refinement (use Shell 181 and Shell 281)

 Critical comparison between the calculated maximum deflection and stress (Y-direction) to the theoretical calculations.

o Performance of the SupportMaster3000:

 State the maximum deflection in the bracket and the stress (Y-direction) at a specific position (same position as used in testing the validity of the SupportMaster2000)

 Show the stress distribution (Y-direction) through the bracket

o Details of another design variant:

 Demonstrate another design variant through altering at least two geometric design parameters so that the maximum deflection is below 12.5mm

 Show the distribution of the deflection through the variant design

o Recommendations when interpreting results:

 In the event that JustHanging Ltd solely based decisions on the finite element results, what factors are important to consider (e.g. possible issues of validity)?

o Log File of the parameterised model:

 A log file of the parameterised model that is annotated to explain the main features of the model.

The report should be no longer than 12 pages (in a font no smaller than 11pt).

A colleague has proved the following rough instructions in how to build the model .

In addition, you may find the following hints helpful:

• Only include a brief overview of how the model was developed, eg half a page. Do not include details of the actual ANSYS commands.

• You should include all details of the model, eg type of element, material properties, loading, boundary conditions, etc. These all affect the validity of the model and must be recorded. Always give details of how the loads and constraints were applied.

• Remember, contour plots give a range of stresses, and the maximum value of stress in the bracket isn’t necessarily the stress that you want. You really need to list the nodal stresses to get accurate answers to compare to theory and examine convergence. Make sure you look at the stress in the vertical part of the bracket, which is where your theoretical calculations will be based.

• Discuss the results critically.
