Speed up my Wordpress blog, improve SEO and include ability to advertise

Hi there, I've recently started a travel blog ([login to view URL]) which has started to get some volume of posts. It is predominantly for friends and relatives, but I'd also like to expand now given I've got some content to a broader audience. A few things I'd like to do:
Improve the speed of the site - it is quite slow right now, likely bogged down by the volume of heavy images
I'm not currently getting pulled up in any level of SEO including when searching for specific articles with the domain included. Any help on improving SEO would be much appreciated.
I know there are plug ins which help with hosting advertising, although it appears I've been poor in attempting to include these on my site.
I know there were some security changes as well - I'd love for the site to be deemed secure upon regular search for the site.
I would also be incredibly helpful for advice for driving new post performance to ensure they are getting cut through too and to continue to do the 'right things' on my site.
