Portfolio

The aim of this project was the monitor the number of coins passing through a coin-acceptor unit (as used in coin-operated games) and report the total number to a web server via HTTP. Various inputs and outputs are used to interface with the game system itself.

After understanding the customer specification, I designed both the PCB and wrote the firmware that runs on the STM32 micro. After manufacturing a prototype and demonstrating that to the customer, I then assisted them in getting 65 PCBs made using contract manufacturers and provided information on how to program and test the units.

- STM32L051C6 microcontroller, with firmware written in C using the Keil IDE and CubeMX software.
- SIM800C module used for GPRS communication.
- 2-layer PCB design in KiCad.
- 5V SMPS power supply design.

GSM Monitoring System for Coin-operated Games

VisiLevel is an ATEX/IECEx certified liquid level measuring system for road fuel tankers comprising:

• Probes that measure liquid level, density, temperature and colour and communicate over CAN.
• LCD display unit that displays probe data.
• ATEX power supply and CAN repeater that provides power and allows third party communication.

VisiLevel was a major R&D project, spanning almost a decade of development. I have been involved in the VisiLevel project from its early days, including:

• Working on early prototypes and developing proof-of-concept versions.
• PCB design of sensor probes and ATEX SMPS power supply.
• Mechanical design of CNC aluminium probe housing and ICB-400 power supply enclosure, including seal design.
• Firmware development for both the display unit and the sensor probes.
• ATEX/IECEx certification of the entire project, including technical documentation, EMC/IP testing, working with notified body, acting as ATEX representative.

VisiLevel Liquid Level Measurement System

LoRaWAN Gateway

As part of the Smart Cities project at Yaşam Teknik, I was responsible for the hardware and firmware development of a LoRa-powered smart water meter with the following features:

• Supports both volumetric and ultrasonic measurement methods.
• Low-power design, lasting over 10 years on a single lithium battery.
• Uses LoRa for long-range communications.
• Uses BLE and NFC to allow secure communication with an Android app to allow service engineers to configure the device.

The design is based around the Telit RE866 module, which integrates both the Nordic nRF52832 low-power micro and the Semtech SX1272 LoRa transceiver. The PCB is a 4-layer board design using KiCad. The on-board LoRa antenna was matched to 50ohms using a network analyser. For the firmware, I chose to use Apache mynewt due to its open-source BLE stack and SX1272 support. I also developed a prototype Android application that used the NFC and BLE features to communicate with the water meter for config and maintenance.
