Seasoned Writer/Editor with Skills, Skills, Skills!

A professional award-winning WRITER/EDITOR of nearly 30 years, I'm well versed in the myriad of writing styles and structures required in today's diverse global market. From copywriting for ads and online sites, to creating human-interest and travel features, or presenting your creative and technical content to your audience in a clear, concise voice -- I'm your Gal Friday! I started in advertising, diversified into journalism and Public Affairs, and eventually came full circle when I ran the Editors Course and taught the Basic Journalism Course for the U.S. defense department. I'm a solid writer, and a tough EDITOR and RESEARCHER, who's committed literally hundreds of individual pieces of journalistic works to print. I insist that my deadlines be met -- no excuses, and no such thing as writer's block or artistic temperment! I get the job done - by deadline, within budget and to YOUR specifications and satisfaction! I'm American Council on Education-certified to develop course materials and teach adults. I am also a trained, qualified, and experienced editor: NO frivilous title and one which takes years to earn! I've lived abroad, traveled, even honorably retired from the U.S. Army. Because of these unique experiences, I possess qualifications and skills that few writer-editors can match. I'm focused, accurate, methodical, creative- and COMMITTED to my work ... so much so that I provide my own PERSONAL GUARANTEE to each project I undertake. (Ask me about this.) My work mantra is ongoing communication, while creating a partnership with my clients because YOUR SUCCESS is MY success.

WRITER/EDITOR

Varied positions and publications
Jun 1978 - Feb 2015 (36 years, 8 months)
I've worked full-time, freelanced and contributed to so many publications it's ridiculous to list them all here - so I'm providing a brief synopsis. My experience is a combination of photo-journalism, public affairs and educating writers. Newspapers are both "dailies" and weeklies, tabloid- and metropolitan-sized, with distributions ranging from a few thousand to worldwide distribution. A few are the Cannoneer, The New York Times, Washington Post, European Stars & Stripes, and a slew of military "in-house" publications. Some career highlights: working with secret service in coverage of D-Day commemorative ceremonies in Normandy, France; public affairs support of international media and coverage of return of combat-wounded to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Wash., D.C.; a New York City Marathon; FBI clearance for freelance coverage of celebrity-driven entertainment on Governor's Island, NYC for rennovation of Statue of Liberty; numerous World War I and II battlesites and memorial-events coverage in Western Europe; exclusive with Gen. Colin Powell (retired), then-Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, White House -- and meeting/interviewing a 106-year-old former Buffalo Soldier, who served with Teddy Roosevelt in the battles for San Juan and Kettle hills in Cuba! (NOTE: I claim only about 30 years' of writing experience, deducting time time for ongoing education, military training and deployments, and an automobile accident which required several major surgeries with recovery times.)

Art Director/Production Superviser

The Moorings
Jan 1998 - Dec 1999 (1 year, 11 months)
Supervised a fast-paced, in-house production department for this international yacht sales and vacation corporation, headquartered in Clearwater. Fl. Responsible for all phases of over-lapping collateral, print ad and direct-marketing pieces, including design, layout, copywriting, editing - ensuring formats suitable for overseas reproduction. Wrote content for then-innovative sailing navigation CD. Setup/ managed onsite photo shoots for annual catalog -a 68-page, full-color brochure, in less than two months. The worth my projects brought to this multi-million dollar company is still unqualified, yet estimated to approx. 2/3rds of total revenue of tbese years - approx. $14 mil.

Military-related education typically excels that provided to students in non-military academic settings for the same time-frames, as courses focus solely on direct-work skills and knowledge. This accredited course is no different: three months' of fast-paced, intensive study and application of basic photography, article and story types, styles, techniques and copyediting. As the government assumes all training costs, applicants must meet stringent entrance requirements, as well as in-depth federal background checks for security clearances. Military journalists usually work under a Public Affairs Office, or service-specific equivalent, so that release of information for both in-house and to non-service media is "centralized" and accurate. Because of this, military journalists are also trained in public affairs, broadcast and speech-writing, and in managing Information Centers for joint-media covered events. Job skills-training in the military is also separate from all other training, such as "basic" training or education for military development and promotion, and from other academic education for service-retainment or for a college degree. When a servicemember graduates from a skill-development course, he may well have been "in" the military for 6 months to years. NOTE: The Defense Information School is the premiere "service university" for the all U.S. armed services and non-military government employees for careers in journalism, broadcasting, graphics and illustration, photography, and computer animation and design. It is a Department of Defense agency so that all journalists and public affairs specialists receive a "common" education across the armed services, which is on par with their civilian counterparts.
