Contest Brief
What I want the winner(s) of this contest to do is create a visually compelling proposal for a comic book based on the attached story. Your contest entry MUST include a sketch of a scene from the story that has multiple panels (not just a book cover).
What I would like to see from you now as a contest entry is
1- some sample graphics based on the attached story,
2- a sense of how you might improve on the work (plot, characters, structure, title, etc.) and
3- an estimated timeline for you to complete a draft of the comic book art. Finally, the timeline should include a list of the key milestone deliveries for the project that will be used to ensure that we are managing from the same set of expectations.
I am on a mission to communicate how science can help schools achieve equity. Inspired by a simple graphic meme that infamously makes a visual distinction between equity and equality, I realized that while the meme had visual power it lacked a crucial element for becoming a useful tool. I first wrote a script as if I would do a talking head video. Next I created primitive storyboards to illustrate the ideas. Finally, I recognized that it lacked character and emotion so I wrote the first half again as a story. The attached document includes both the new story and the storyboard. I expect contest submissions to draw their subject matter from the attached documents.
I am going to fund the creation of the proposal directly through this contest and am considering either grant funding and/or crowdfunding the completion of the book. My goal is to have a physical prototype of a comic book in hand by the beginning of August in time for a conference where I will be meeting with potential funders. (If a full prototype by August is unrealistic let me know because I have no idea what’s realistic.)
#1 Contest Entry: Sample Scene Sketches, Your Ideas, plus Estimated Cost & Timeline to complete a full proposal. $500 prize (up to 3 winners)
#2 Proposal: Comic Book prototype to be completed by August 2021 (Compensation to be determined)
#3 Prototype: To be used for fundraising to complete the book (Compensation to be determined)
