Contest Brief

This book is about a land geographically inspired by Aotearoa New Zealand. The story centres around for young warlocks who are studying magick in Whangaroa (geographically inspired by Dunedin). When a foreign army attacks they have to make the choice between staying to fight, or fleeing to the north to seek help from the Arikitotoa - the Storm Chief.

This project is for creation of a map which will sit within the body of the text. I will need a file with writing that is legible in a standard-sized paperback book and also an A4 file that I can use to print and put on my wall.

Attached will be a file which is a rough make-up of the map. This has an outline of New Zealand, but I would prefer that the outlines of the map you draw do not directly resemble New Zealand so please just use it as inspiration.

Here are the list of locations of interest. Label the map as shown in the image and use this list to add any extra flavour you feel is necessary i.e a lake for Wairoa or a volcano for rototipua.

Aotaonga (cloud treasure) - country which the story is based

Ōmarino (place of calm) - the north island
• Araroa (Long path) - region at the north of Aotaonga
• Onehāpara (dawn beach) - first place in Aotaonga to see the dawn
• Maungarangi (sky mountain) - west coast of Ōmarino. Hold great reverence to the mountain which is the region is named after, Maungarangi, the sky mountain
o Wānanga mo te Toka (University for the Rock)
• Rototipua (demon lake) - hot lake that is warmed by nearby active volcanoes. It is forbidden to enter the lake
o Wānanga mo te Ahi (University for the Fire)
• Hauriri (angry wind) - this is where the leader of Aotaonga called Arikitotoa (the storm chief) resides. Many of the disputes of Ōmarino are resolved here
o Wānanga mo te Āngi (University for the Wind)

Ōmotumotu (place of separation) - the south island
• Ikapuke (fish hill) - settlement atop a large hill with views down to the clear water of the strait. The people here offer a ferry service across
• Awatoa (stormy valley) - strait separating Ōmarino and Ōmotumotu
• Kohumātao (cold mist) - the west coast of Ōmotumotu. A place of heavy rain and dense forest. A mist that freezes anything it touches lurks here
• Māniawera (burnt plain) - a large desert across the east coast of Ōmotumotu. Home to lots of poisonous and dangerous creatures
• Pōhatu Makere (abandoned stone) - line of mountains separating the east and west coasts of Ōmotumotu. Home to large predatory eagles called īkara
• Whangaroa (long harbour) - town where the university of water learning is held
o Wānanga mo te Waiako (University for the Water)
o Pukerātā (hill of rātā trees)
o Roimata (tear). Referring to a wet forest north of Whangaroa
o Aratangi (weeping river)
• Waiora (water health) - Mountainous region surrounding a huge lake. Home to a group of water benders who specialize in healing
• Motuwara (quiet island) - Uncharted island. Nobody who has gone there has ever come back. Rumours are that a taniwha (monster) calls the place home
