Contest Brief

I am acting for a UK independent school on a major fundraising appeal. We need a professionally-designed brochure, initially for use in one-to-one meetings with potential donors, and then a few months down the line for a bigger print run.
I am no designer, but have created a draft version of the brochure in InDesign. I would like the chosen designer to broadly follow the shape of this, but to take it to the next level. I am looking for something that is more contemporary and more eye-catching.
Essentials: A4 landscape, 16 pages. End result to be provided as an InDesign file.
I am not keen on white text on coloured backgrounds. I think pull quotes are important.
I will create a shared Dropbox folder with all the copy, photos and graphics. I would like to receive the completed brochure as an InDesign file so that I can make alterations going forward.
For the purposes of choosing the designer for this job, I would like to see an example double page spread created as an alternative to pps 8 – 9 of my ploddy design, below. I have attached a selection of photos and graphics below, as well as the necessary copy. I suggest you visit the school's website to get a feel for the place and how it expresses itself - www.sherborne.com But don't be slavish in following this look - the school realises it's not great and they are actually working on a new site at the moment.
To give you some idea of the type of professional polish I am looking for, check out the King's School document - here http://issuu.com/underhillassociates/docs/king_s_review_medium_resolution_fin/1 . OK, it's a review, not a fundraising brochure, but it's got the crispness I need.
Good luck!

It was hard to choose a winner, especially when there were some really strong entries. I have never used this site before so I don't know any of these designers. Re colours and text, it's a question of degree. I think in limited amounts it can look good, but not when it dominates. Sorry if my brief was in any way misleading. I tried to provide further indication of the look I wanted by posting the link to the other document.

I don't think there was anything wrong with the brief. Sometimes designers on here can be a little "raw" in the immediate aftermath of losing out on a contest, particularly as we've generally invested a good deal of time & effort. Also, things are a matter of taste & often I see winners that to me just don't seem good enough, but hey that's the way of things. Not in this case, of course - I think the winning design is really nice. Good luck to you.

Don't feel bad sir. You gave plenty of feedback. Lots of people never give any. I totally agree with easywebber's comments. Great choice for the contest!

I think this question is more directed to fellow designers here, but if the CH knows the answer, then great! : I think InDesign can import psd format files, can anybody confirm? And will it work with psd files saved from Photoshop CS2 v9? I can only work with CS2 v9. Thanks.

What I mean edit is, I think you know. The "integrated" feature is just to (1) toggle the layer visibility, (2) when you edit the photoshop file, the image in Indesign page will also be updated. So, you can't edit the file "directly" on the indesign page. So in this case, the adobe indesign is just mean to prepare the design to be printed. If some modification needed, edit the photoshop file.

Thanks again, ashasaffiya - I understand. I've now recreated in native InDesign. Appreciate you alerting me to this.

People have asked about a corporate style guideline. To my knowledge, the school does not have one. However, it may help to look at their propectus for a steer on font types - http://issuu.com/glenncoombsshelleys/docs/sherborne_girls

I'm impressed by the way contestants have adapted their entries. Some good stuff here. I should say that I work with many top UK schools on similar projects and I will have more work coming up soon.

Hi, Thanks for some strong entries. If it's any help, here's a link to a document that manages to be relatively conservative as well as eye-catching. I particularly like the way they have used coloured sections, with minimal use of white text - http://issuu.com/underhillassociates/docs/the_prince_s_teaching_institute_ann

Also may I just ask is the brochure focused around raising funds solely for the Recital Hall, or is this just page 8-9's role?
