In marketing research, verbatim coding is the assignment of numeric codes to various words, phrases, ideas, sounds, or pictures so that information and meaning can be extracted and analyzed quantitatively. The principle is very straight forward. Usually you have a list of codes in one excel sheet, called a code frame. It looks like this:
Red = code 1
Blue = code 2
Green = code 3
In the other excel sheet you have the answers of the respondents in full sentences like this:
"I like the Red color", "I think I go for the blue color", etc... .
What you need to do as a coder is to assign the codes of the code frame to the open ends that are mentioned accordingly. This example is quite simple of course in reality the codes could be more than just a word and it can be about any other subject.
