Secondly, the assignment says "Design a graphical user interface to display the movement of the cars, so that the observer can visualize the cars, control their movements, and verify the protocol." That means you need a GUI that enables you and any other observer to see the cars moving across the bridge when they have permission to move across the bridge, and if they are waiting to enter the critical section (i.e. the bridge), it shows the cars waiting. That means you need to create some kind of animation that responds to the steps of your algorithm, and that you can show the message queues of the steps in the algorithm you use along with the logical times of the events. Write the times when messages are sent and received and who the sender and receiver are for each process in a file. You can use something as simple as characters that move across the screen or an interface made from Java libraries or from using one of the X Window window managers such as Gnome or Motif on the Linux or Sun machines. You cannot use Windows because you need to have separate processes for each car. If you want to use Python for the GUI, you can do that too.
Another matter is the sheer time that it takes you to set up your computers fo do a demonstration. We do not have sufficient time to work that way. Hence, I would like all of you to be able to run your programs on one machine and to use a Makefile. There is no reason that you should have to remember a long sequence of compiler and runtime options. When you do a demo you should be able to start your program quickly within a couple of minutes.
