Basically we're looking for something like a whatsapp style messaging platform except the chats will almost always have a context associated with it. Those contexts can be anything ranging from an order number, part number , customer name or any other type of subject that is specific to our organization. So the application will need to connect to our MS SQL server database in order to reference the data.
The functionality and ease of data entry will be key to the application being widely accepted so this is a crucial element that needs to be done well.. Probably something along the lines of the user typing in part of the subject, eg a part number and the application will start to match possible outcomes and provide options to select. Very much like google auto-predicting what word you're trying to type.
Basically a user will start a new message thread and enters in his subject (based on the data entry idea provided above), he'll then selection a target recipient or target group and then type some text, add some pictures or capture a video etc. So the main difference between this and whatsapp is with whatsapp you first select the person you want to contact and then create your message. In this case, your starting point is the subject and the recipient is secondary. So on the whatsapp main screen will be a list of contacts. On this application's main screen will be a list of subjects and their latest unread messages from various respondents, listed in order of the most recent updated subject at the very top. So the user can quickly read the most updated responses to the subject on the main page or click on it to expand into a secondary screen which will allow him/her to review the full history or context of the subject. Seeing the message history the ease of browsing it is a secondary function that's very important to the usability of the application as well because it's important for the user to quickly catch up with the context of the subject in case he forgot.
Thirdly, we can treat the creator of the subject as the owner of the subject and he/she can tick any particular response as "important" so that users can opt to browse only "important" responses to even more quickly get themselves up to speed.
Even though the application can have it's own storage system, we would need to have the textual portion of it replicated on our database as well. The final integration aspects of this I need to leave open ended and we'll need to discuss with the developer to find the best solution moving forward. At this stage, the important thing to focus on is the MS SQL Server platform as the foundation.
We're hoping to work with developers who have already had extensive history with applications of this kind so we can fast track it's development and perhaps even tap into ideas you've thought of that we hadn't.
