RURAL POVERTY AND HUMAN DEVELOPMENT

The study has examined the rural poverty and human development in Sri Lanka. The rural areas belong to non-metropolitan areas that have a higher poverty head count ratio than metropolitan areas. Obviously lack of human development is one of the important concepts which explains poverty. The main objective of this research focus is to explore the relationship between poverty and lack of human development background in the selected rural area in Sri Lanka.
The study used both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The main primary data collection methods were questionnaire survey and households interviews.
(CASE STUDY : The village belongs to the Kegalle districts, it is a remote and rural village. Most of the villagers’ main economy activity is agriculture and often have faced more difficulties due to unfavourable climatic conditions and unsustainable livelihood strategies).
According to this study, I realized that these unsustainable livelihood strategies and climatic conditions make them more vulnerable. This incident, has influenced their present poverty and low human development conditions and caused deprivation of other necessary valuable capabilities.
The study found that their low income was connected to the poverty and the human development situation of the village. The human development degradation is caused by lack of educational attainment of the elderly people of the village. Also it has affected the present low living standard of the villagers. Also the study focused on the evaluation of the present poverty reduction policy in SriLanka namely “Samurdhi”. The final result shows that the policies do not have a complete effect on the way of survival of the villages in the present situation.
