Academic researcher, English language specialist

Possessing a sound background in Senior School English teaching, I have also taught English at graduate and post graduate level at a wide variety of universities, where I have edited several thesis in a variety of disciplines at both MA and PHD level. In addition I was a part-time copy writer for AdMark advertising agency, one of the largest advertising agencies in Southern Africa. My bid to host a conference, 'Africa Speaks to Europe' was accepted by the National Foundation for Research (South Africa) as well as my bid to teach the South African Police more effective English for reporting crime. The project was funded by th US Embassy in Pretoria, specifically the project for English education.

The place of Poetry in Second Language Teaching

IATEFL Proceedings of the Conference, Sofia, Bulgaria, 1997.
Most ESLprofessionals eschew poetry in English courses. Central to the contention here is that the emotional impact of poetic expression elicits diverse imaginary responses. So much of L2 courses required rote learning of patterns and structures, thus poetry from a known context and addressing urgent historical realities produces heartfelt unique responses.

Myths and Legnds in the Writing of the San and Khoi.

Proceedings of the Coference Africa Speaks to Europe.' parlay University, Olomutz, 1999.
This paper explores the complex messages of ancient oral tales of nomadic so-called 'Bushman' culture. The political realities and philosophical ideologies hold untold value for modern society.

Towards A Democratic System of Education

Proceedings of the Conference for Globea in Prague
In tracing the history of the South African Education System, and outlining the progressive changes in Post-apartheid South Africa, the central aim of this article was to break negative stereotypes commonly held of the 'other' in Czech society. Sadly the Romani are side lined in many cases and provided with special needs education, which appears to be the result of an assumption that the Romani are retarded. While South Africa treated the indigenous population similarly during apartheid, the new education

From Local Myth to Urban Legend

Tesol Arabia Journal
Within the context of teaching in Oman, I discuss the firm belief in the Jinn, folk tales such as Sinbad the Sailor and a Thousand and One Nights. These mythic tales are contrasted with fantasies spread in a 'heartbeat' from the capital cities of Dubai and Muscat. Seemingly, all societies crave fantasy and myths in different genres.

Utilising the Press as Best Practice for Reading Programmes

TESOL Arabia Journal, 2007.
In seeking to find ways to engage Arab readers in materials utilised in foundation courses for engineers, the central contention is: students relate best to reading materials that touch on their own socio-political environment. Tapping into the students ardent belief system invokes strong and articulate responses.

Nature and History in the Poetry of William Plommer

Theoria, 1992.
Utilising the theories of Bahktin and Deconstruction, this paper investigates the poetry of William Plomer, indicating a deep fascination with African politics and history that both fascinates and terrifies him.

The White Girls' School:Tyranny or Power?

Proceedings of the Conference, Nussuka, Nigeria. 1992.
The article examines the evasion of political awareness in the traditional education in white female schools in apartheid South Africa and indicates the how the dehistoricised curriculum provided little preparation for the national and global environment, in favour of the presentation of stereotypical figures of black people in the landscape.

The White Girls' School: Education or Tyrrany

Proceedings of the Conerence, Nusukka, Nigeria 1992Nigeria.
