Code to determine which Apps are associated to an extention in Windows

For a given extension, e.g. mp4 or pdf, I need a component, usable in a python app, that tells me 1. which app is currently the default application that is called when a file with that extension is being double clicked on (incl. the path to the software that is being used) and 2. which other software that is currently installed on the computer could be used to output/play that content as well. The deliverable is code with file extension as input and path to default software and list of path to other supporting software for that extension as output.
