Due to slow acoustic propagation of acoustic waves the data rates in underwater acoustic communications that can be archived is relatively very low compared to RF channels in the air. In this work we will study through matlab simulations first then experimentally the performance of uniquely decodable ternary code sets for highly overloaded synchronous Code-Division Multiple Access(CDMA) systems in underwater acoustic scenarios. The underlying main challenge is to design and experiment advanced receivers that could potentially mitigate the high multipath and Doppler effect present in the underwater acoustic channels.
