How To Succeed As A Digital Nomad

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed and are looking for a change of pace, then becoming a digital nomad might be the perfect solution. Many entrepreneurs & freelancers get creative by balancing their private life with working on projects they enjoy - all while travelling wherever they want. But how do digital nomads thrive?

Nomads specialise

There are so many passive income opportunities. But if you choose one that you both excel at and enjoy - you’re way more likely to create consistent success. If you’re a writer - consider freelance blog writing, editing, transcription or even eBook creation. If you’re trained in marketing, why not help businesses out with their SEO, social media & campaigns? Getting ‘known’ for that skillset you specialise in means that clients are more likely to recommend you to others. As a result, your client list is going to fill up in no time.

Nomads know the Wi-Fi in their area

Wi-Fi, or the lack thereof can be a deal breaker for any digital nomad. You don't want your Zoom call with a client to be inundated with a freezing screen, glitchy background noise and that dreaded ‘unstable internet connection’ sign. It’s not professional. Do some research on co-working spaces and the strongest Wi-Fi in your current area so you can collaborate and work more efficiently.

Nomads are brilliant budgeters

This lifestyle requires planning. You have to manage your finances, book flights and rent rooms - often converting between currencies. Set up your ‘nomad’ budget based on the money coming in from clients. Since freelance work can vary from month to month, be sure to leave some breathing room in your estimations. Then get crystal clear on your expenses, including the extra charges that come with moving around as a digital nomad. For example, some international payments might have extra fees or take longer to process. It’s always a good idea to have at least two accounts/cards as well, in case one gets lost. If your freelance work requires building lots of networks - do some additional research on which countries could also provide the most profitable opportunities for you.

Nomads pack light

Ideally, digital nomads should be ready to jet off and explore new places at any given moment. But before they do that, part of the planning process involves deciding what gets stored where, what gets sold (to fatten up that travel account) and what’s coming along with you. This isn’t always an easy feat. If there are things you just can’t bear to part with then companies can hold your possessions in storage - and you can manage this storage online.

Nomads set boundaries between work and play

Without a boss to tell you how long to work for it can be tempting to overexert your energy. And while your income is correlated to your hard work, it’s important to set clear work-life boundaries not only with yourself, but also with your clients. For example, answering emails at 3am is definitely a no-go. After all, what’s the point of this nomadic lifestyle if you don’t have time to actually enjoy the places you are in?

The nomad could be you
