counting car using opencv+python

I've done opencvc++ moving-object counting and have a library (libobjectcounter) that I would use, possibly enhancing the tracking portion with a new opencv c++ tracking library I have create (libmultitracker). The conditions of your test video seems to be perfect for a tracking demo: there was enough light to see clearly, but mid-day and overcast so that shadows were very minor. He seemed to be tracking after detecting motion (for a highway road lane, that would be looking for motion in one area, then tracking (using something like camshift, tld, or ct, etc) that object until it crosses the counter line. The size of the tracked object, as it crossed the counting line, appears to be how he determined the category (car / small truck / big truck). So I think by building on my existing tracking and counting opencv c++ libraries, and with optimal camera placement, decent resolution and frame rate, and cooperative outdoor lighting and time of day (like your test video), I could achieve performance comparable to what we see there. I'm in the middle of another opencv project, so it would be a few weeks from now until I could devote significant hours to this project (so I said 30 days).

Hello, Actually I would prefer implementing this project on C++, because I was using it for 3 last years in a performance critical projects and it always satisfied my needs (it could be even more portable than python, only open-cv port of your platform will limit usage of the software), but if you prefer python based solution there is no problem for going this way. About the project limitations: 1) You must understand that there will be some accuracy issues (expect that about few percents could be miscounted). But it's quite OK for most of systems. 2) There could be a difficulty of vehicles counting on very high-traffic roads, so if you are going to place the camera in such a place, we will need additional project for implementing this. Expected workflow: 1) I am going to research the field and try to find the best possible existing solution for this (the closest to desired behavior), and if this one does satisfy your needs we will make it the most accurate. 2) If there are no such a solution, I will implement it from the scratch using the opencv's gaussian mixture background removal + feature detection + manual handling of bounding boxes intersection (as in your video) would be quite OK. Besides it's also important to describe which types of cars do you want to monitor, the more we have -> the harder it will be to implement. We must decide wisely based on your needs. i have working on a project have a similar objectives in my GP but i was using EmguCV with C# but it's not a problem with python because it's the same library i will work first in detecting cars with a video surveillance the i will have a center point for every car so i can track if cross the line or not if you need further information you can contact me :)

I'm image processing guy and my major at collage was connected to image processing in traffic. I'm applying here because your project is very interesting to me and it is in field in which I have experience, big interest and I'm very passionate about it.

I have already experience with OpenCV from different projects, it should be straightforward implementing this problem. What has to be discussed are lighting condition. Do you expect the system to be working also during nights? I would need as many test data as possible.
