Part I - 1250 words  Talking about the recent past Plan how to collect spoken data on this area. Be careful not to contaminate the data by making your participants aware of the language area you wish to focus on. Try out your ideas on a colleague. Plan how you will analyse the data. You may wish to compare the data e.g. With teaching materials With what you were taught or expected Between sets of respondents e.g. first & second language users, genders, age etc. as appropriate. Collect & record your data. Ideally, you should have 6 sets of short data or 4 sets of longer data. Transcribe & analyse the relevant parts of the data. Part II - 1250 Words Project 2: Language across cultures The purpose of this project is to consider the interaction of language and culture. This project is based on data collected from textual analysis. You need to compare how language is affected by culture. You can do this by: A Producing a report on similarities and differences when comparing language in 2 similar contexts across 2 language cultures emails You will need to collect sufficient data and to submit your data along with your analysis. You can also ask colleagues to comment on differences and include this in your report. B Producing a report comparing an English version of a text with a version of the same text translated into your own language. You should translate the text yourself and then ask colleagues to offer advice on any sections which give you difficulty. You can also compare your version with Google translate. Focus your comments on areas of adjustment within the translation process. You can use the attached email letter (A) or the children’s story (B).
