I have more than 11 years of automation testing experience and during my tenure for couple of clients I have worked on similar requirements of creating dashboards for tracking project status. To achieve this I have used MS Excel as data source and using VBA macros I was fetching data from Access DB, converting the fetched data into reports along with applying business logic on the data.
