Optimizing PHP code and data structure for mySQL to speed up queries

Project description: I have a mySQL database that is around 880 mb in size. It is in one database with 6 tables of data. Every table has around 2,9 million rows of data. The queries is fetched by an PHP application (varnish PHP). The application return around 5000 rows of data to the user in the users query. The data in the database is data from 290 municipalities with the following data for each municipality: population, population growth, inmigration, outmigration, death, born. The fetch time is around 60-70 seconds when making queries from the PHP application. I like the fetch time to be under 5 seconds for a search. You could suggest and do the follwing to speed up the queries: Optimizing/ change the PHP code Structure the mySQL data differently in multiply databases or adding more tables.
