LDAP server configuration help

Need help configuring an LDAP server for use as a shared address book to be used with Outlook, Thunderbird, etc. Server is already installed and functional to a large degree, however we are having difficulty getting TLS working correctly and setting up the address book and system users as described in various tutorials. Would like someone who has specifically set up shared address books before, since there may be specifics to this task that go beyond general LDAP knowledge.
