I am looking for a creative writer to help me with a project. I have a specific genre or theme in mind for the piece(s) of writing, and I would like them to be between 1001-2000 words in length. I am open to suggestions and would appreciate someone with experience in creative writing. COVID-19 impacted all of our lives—in some big ways and in some small ways. We saw and read news reports of a number of inequities that the pandemic exposed—record unemployment, differences in access to education, disparities in health care and housing, who is exposed due to their “essential worker” job, incarceration, etc. We also saw mutual aid networks pop up, people volunteering to check in on elderly or immune-compromised neighbors, others sewing masks to make sure that everyone had one. In the past few years, our attention also has been drawn to racial injustice and ongoing police brutality. People from all over the world, from various racial, ethnic, and economic backgrounds have protested and demanded changes to how people and institutions treat one another. Additionally, the world has witnessed an increasing number of wild fires, severe earthquakes, and hurricanes, which have killed and displaced thousands of people. Research indicates that these extreme weather patterns can largely be attributed to human behavior (e.g., our reliance on fossil fuels for energy, the production of plastic, transportation, and more). Thus, we are living in a time when we can literally see how various social institutions and forces are shaping our individual and collective lives. Now, using your sociological imagination, envision a VERY DIFFERENT society. You might think about the kind of society that you would want to live in. What do you imagine? What does this society look like? How do people live and relate with one another? How do social institutions and forces (e.g., government, media, educational institutions, technology, culture) operate? Do inequities exist among people of different racial and ethnic backgrounds, genders, sexualities, educational levels, and citizenship statuses? Is society arranged in ways that are more equitable? If so, describe how that occurs. Also, what does the society look like in times of crisis versus other times? Using your sociological imagination, you are tasked with creating and articulating a DIFFERENT society than the one that currently exists. You will use the knowledge you’ve gained this semester about various social institutions and factors to think through various elements that are required for a society to exist. I have listed some questions below for you to consider as you design the society. After describing the society, you will chronicle what it is like to live amidst a societal-wide crisis in this imagined society. Describe the society; how is it set up? In this society, which is very different than the one we experience today, what is different? Are we in a different time, geographic location, or culture? How does this society function? How do social institutions like the government, media, educational institutions, technology, and culture work? What kinds of laws exist? Who enforces them? How does education happen—in classrooms? outside? Who are the teachers? Do people live with relatives (family members) or are there different types of living arrangements? What are the conflicts that exist within the society? Is movement (whether it be for travel, jobs, or living) between regions restricted? Do national borders exist? How do people interact with one another? What kinds of rituals and traditions exist? What do people find meaningful in this society? What do they fear and why? What forms of technology does this society have? (Remember that any tool is a form of technology. So, even pens and pencils can be considered as technology.) You are welcome to describe other factors of this society as well. Chronicle life in this society amidst a societal-wide crisis. Some sort of societal-wide crisis occurs in the society you created – maybe a war, the plague, an invasion from outer space. How is it handled? Is it the government that facilitates the response, or another institution? How do institutions and people respond to the crisis? How is it reported on by the media? How do people experience it? How do people relate to one another amidst the crisis? The goal of this writing assignment is to use your sociological imagination. Remember that sociological imagination combines personal biography + historical context. In other words, people’s individual experiences are shaped by the social and historical context in which they live (e.g., people living before the age of the internet and mobile phones used personal visits, land lines and postal mail for personal correspondence instead of texts or emails). You are going to write about social institutions and forces that shape people’s lives but also about the ways in which people shape the world around them.
