Hello, I need some help preparing various texts and illustrations for publishing. I have selected a number of old books in PDF format that I aim to redesign and republish. From these PDFs I need the content extracted and made ready for reuse. The contents are a combination of text, a few photographs and vector illustrations. This is mostly straightforward but due to the age and state of the original books, some of the images and illustrations need to be retouched or redrawn. You will need to have: 1. simple word processing skills and excellent English in order to proofread the extracted text. 2. Photoshop skills to retouch the few photographs. 3. Illustrator skills to trace and very accurately redraw some of the illustrations as vectors. The content will be delivered as individual titles on the completion of one book, as simple unformatted text documents with illustrations in corresponding folders. This request for a quote is for the preparation of 10 titles to begin with. There are a large number of other similar titles I would like to work on with the same collaborator should the work be of a high standard and our collaboration successful. Having viewed the archive I've gone through the books and selected "The Essentials of Lettering" as a sample for calculating the quote. The files for Chapter 5 (V) can be downloaded from my portfolio area (Typography restoration), the time recorded and extrapolated for the remainder of the 10 books is the basis for the quote. The "Studio Handbook Lettering" book does not appear to have a narrative text as such so will probably comprise almost entirely of cleaned up scans. Because the scanning process involves optics there is inevitably a small amount of detail lost and is unavoidable. The scans have been cleaned up, however as best as can be achieved to the resolution limit of the capture device used (this varies). Retracing may be appropriate in some cases but is not practicable for the whole project. If there's any other further info required get in touch. regards dave

Hi. I'm a native English speaker, so the proofing is no problem. I have 15 years experience with Photoshop and Illustrator, so that's no problem either. The samples I viewed were OCR, so there will be errors. I also use InDesign so I could do the layout for your project as well. What else would you like to know?

Hello Ian. My proposal for Prep of Book Content for Publishing… In the 10 books there are 2172 pages. I estimate an average of 30 minutes per page; including checking, correcting and re-formatting the text extraction, or retouching or recreating the graphics and illustrations. There are a significant number of blank pages in some of the books that we can deduct from the final amount. I have made some examples from two of the books to show; text extraction and re-formatting, image extraction and labelling, image retouching and a complete re-drawing of an illustration. If you could supply me with an email address I can forward them to you. I offer to charge 30 euros per hour and will designate at least 30 hours per week to fulfill the preparation. The work requires not only the skills mentioned but also a high level of focus and attention to detail. If I may add, I am very interested in the content of the books and offer an understanding of the material that will assist in my work. I have over 20 years of experience in graphic design, however I have only just joined the Freelancer website, looking for varied and interesting work, and though I have no reviews I offer my word that I can fulfill this contract to your satisfaction. Hi, I checked out two PDFs, Elements of Lettering and Studio Handbook. It really looks nice job to do but it is impossible for me to bid for all books, so I am going to check out the books and after discussing with my co-workers (2 illustrators and 2 editors), then I will bid one by one for all books. But I need more information about the job, for example there are a lot of typograhic elements in Elements of Lettering, and there are many box designs in Studio Handbook. As a POP stand designer, I have almost all box designs, do you think it is possible to use them? Well, finally it is better to talk for all books one by one if you like. regards. Ferit.
