Real-world signals are often contaminated by noise. For example, signals recorded by electronic equipment are often contaminated by 50 Hz noise from the power supply. The aim of this laboratory practical is to design digital filters to remove or reduce noise present in signals. There are various kinds of noise. A filter is usually designed to reduce a certain kind of noise. There is not a filter that is capable of removing all kinds of noise. A noisy signal should be analysed before a suitable filter is selected and designed to reduce its noise. There are four noisy signals to be analysed and filtered in this practical. You will use the MATLAB SPTool to perform the tasks. **Preparation** Download ‘[login to view URL]’ to your computer from the unit’s website. After it is unzipped, you should find the following MATLAB files ‘[login to view URL]’, ‘[login to view URL]’, ‘[login to view URL]’ and ‘[login to view URL]’. **Tasks** 1. ‘ECG_3a’ is an electrocardiogram signal contaminated by a slowly varying noise component. The sampling frequency is 200 Hz. Design a filter that removes the slowly varying component but preserve the shape of the signal components of the electrocardiogram. 2. ‘ECG_3b’ is another electrocardiogram signal contaminated by wideband noise and a sine wave. The sampling frequency is 200 Hz. Design a filtering system to remove noise and recover the original signal. 3. ‘ECG_3c’ is also an electrocardiogram signal contaminated by noise. The sampling frequency is 200 Hz. Design a filtering system to remove noise and recover the original signal. Hint: You may need two filters. 4. ‘sig_3’ consists of three tone bursts. Each tone burst has a unique frequency. The signal is contaminated by noise. The sampling frequency is 1000 Hz.
